Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Psychodynamic Therapist in Chicago, Illinois
“I want lasting change. Not a superficial fix.”
You are coming to therapy for permanent healing–not to throw a bandaid on your problems. You're ready to understand the forces shaping who you are and to be challenged to uncover what holds you back.
Meaningful and sustainable change is about shifting the patterns that shape your life—patterns in how you think, relate to others, and treat yourself. My approach to therapy dives deep into understanding these patterns and supports you in breaking free of them to be the person you want to be.
“I know my thoughts are irrational. I need help get them out of my head.”
Maybe you can’t stop worrying about unlikely scenarios, or perhaps you feel bad about yourself no matter how much you accomplish. You know your thoughts aren’t true, but that doesn’t soothe your distress. Perhaps you’ve done therapy before that helped you spot irrational thoughts—but the anxiety or despair remains. Together, we can uncover why your mind works this way to reduce the power of these thoughts.
“What is Psychodynamic Psychotherapy?”
Psychodynamic (also called psychoanalytic) therapy is a form of talk therapy focused on increasing self-awareness, emotional expression, and healthy relationships. It is used to treat a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, and stress. You can expect therapy sessions to include making connections between your life experiences, sharing your inner thoughts and feelings, and identifying ways to change relationship and behavior patterns.
One goal of psychodynamic psychotherapy is to “make the unconscious conscious.” We all have emotions outside of our awareness impacting our behavior and reactions to life events. As a psychodynamic therapist, I can help you uncover these hidden forces to live with more awareness and clarity.
Psychodynamic therapy may be a good fit for you if:
You want to develop an in-depth understanding of yourself and your relationships
You are ready to commit to at least weekly therapy sessions
You are struggling with persistent challenges such as long term anxiety, depression, or relationship issues
You find yourself repeating unhealthy patterns but can’t stop
If any of this list describes you, I can help you better understand the root causes of your emotional distress and how to resolve them. This is challenging but immensely rewarding work. If you are ready to uncover what is beneath your current challenges, psychodynamic therapy may be the right treatment for you.
